🎶 ALBUM VAULT #245 🎶
The concert journey continues…
Vertical Horizon – Everything You Want — 9/10
💿 Plex Media Server
I LOVE this album. It takes me right back to my days working at WTMX, The Mix, in Chicago.
I saw Vertical Horizon at the House of Blues with the station and brought my wife, who was still my girlfriend at the time.
Now, before we get to the music, I owe her another apology. 😂
I was summoned by the E of E&K and promptly got up, completely forgetting to grab her. Left her sitting at the table while I talked to him for about ten minutes.
She was NOT happy.
And the best part? Two days later, I saw him in the hallway, said hello, and he completely ignored me.
Well, that was ten minutes well spent. BLAH.
Anyway… THE ALBUM!
Everything You Want came out in 1999 and turned Vertical Horizon from an independent acoustic-rock band into a major radio act. Matt Scannell and Keith Kane had been at it for years, but this record was their big breakthrough.
And the hits were fantastic:
“Everything You Want” — #1 Hot 100
“You’re a God” — #23
“Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)” — #58
“We Are” — #21 Alternative
That title track was EVERYWHERE in 2000. And “Best I Ever Had”? What a beautiful song. Gary Allan later had a country hit with it, too.
But I also love “Finding Me,” “Miracle,” “Give You Back” and “Shackled.” Such a solid album, full of great melodies, guitars and that late-’90s alternative pop-rock sound I still love.
The album went double platinum, and deservedly so.
Great album. Great show. Another great memory from my Mix days.
Well, except for abandoning my future wife at the table.
Sorry, honey. 😂
