🎶 ALBUM VAULT #243 🎶
Well, I got to sneak one in today…
Back to the concert journey.
Huey Lewis & The News – Sports — 10/10
💿 Pool Table Green Vinyl
I saw Huey Lewis & The News when I was working at The Mix in the early 2000s, and I’ve always had a soft spot for Huey.
Especially now.
Huey has Ménière’s disease, the same hearing issue I deal with. His hearing problems eventually forced him to stop performing in 2018. For a guy whose entire life was music, that has to be brutal.
Now, Sports…
COME ON.
What a MASSIVE album.
This thing is basically a greatest-hits album disguised as a regular studio album.
The classic lineup of Huey Lewis, Johnny Colla, Chris Hayes, Sean Hopper, Mario Cipollina and Bill Gibson absolutely nailed it.
And look at these hits:
“Heart and Soul” — #8
“I Want a New Drug” — #6
“The Heart of Rock & Roll” — #6
“If This Is It” — #6
“Walking on a Thin Line” — #18
That is just stupid good.
Then you still have “Bad Is Bad,” “Finally Found a Home,” “You Crack Me Up” and “Honky Tonk Blues.”
The album went to #1, stayed on the Billboard 200 for an incredible 160 consecutive weeks, and basically owned radio for a while.
Great band. Great songs. Great memory of seeing them live during my Mix days.
And these days, I probably understand Huey’s story a little more than I ever wanted to.
