Keeping the Phil run going.
This is Phil’s second solo album, and you can already hear that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted his solo records to sound like by this point. Big drums, horns, heartbreak, anger, soul… all of it.
“I Don’t Care Anymore” opens it perfectly. Angry Phil is GREAT Phil.
“I Cannot Believe It’s True” is pure horn-driven Phil Collins. Love it.
“Like China” is quirky, fun and very Phil.
“Do You Know, Do You Care?” gets darker again and has that huge dramatic sound.
“You Can’t Hurry Love” is Phil taking a Motown classic and somehow making it completely his own.
“It Don’t Matter to Me” is another great upbeat track with those horns all over it.
“Thru These Walls” is creepy, strange and absolutely not your normal pop song.
Then we get to “Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away.”
One of my top 10 ballads of all time.
I absolutely LOVE this song.
And if you’ve ever been there…
You know.
No long explanation needed.
“The West Side” gives you a nice instrumental break before “Why Can’t It Wait ’Til Morning” closes the album quietly and beautifully.
This album has a little bit of everything I love about Phil Collins.
The drums.
The horns.
The sad songs.
The angry songs.
The voice.
Yep.
Still love Phil Collins.
Still not changing. 😂
