🎶 ALBUM VAULT #220 🎶
Life and work got in the way today. I was hoping to get six albums in, but four will have to do.
And this is a GOOD one to end on.
Phil Collins – Face Value — 10/10
💿 Original Black Vinyl
I LOVE PHIL COLLINS MUSIC.
All day. Every day.
That is not changing.
Face Value was Phil’s first solo album, released in 1981 while he was still very much part of Genesis, and you can hear him figuring out exactly what his own sound was going to be.
Of course it starts with “In the Air Tonight.”
That drum fill alone should have its own ZIP code.
But this album is so much more than one song.
“This Must Be Love” is great.
“Behind the Lines” gets a totally different feel from the Genesis version.
“I Missed Again” is one of my favorites here, with those great horns.
“If Leaving Me Is Easy” is beautiful.
“You Know What I Mean” is another emotional one.
Then you get things like “The Roof Is Leaking,” “Droned,” “Hand in Hand,” “I’m Not Moving” and that wild cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows.”
A lot of this album came out of a pretty rough time in Phil’s personal life, and you can hear it all over the record.
Sad.
Angry.
Funny.
Soulful.
And somehow still catchy as hell.
This is where Phil Collins the solo artist really began.
And yeah…
I’m going to say it again.
I LOVE PHIL COLLINS MUSIC.
