🎶 ALBUM VAULT #219 🎶
After a long day of meetings, I can finally get back to the important stuff. 😂
TWO FOR TUESDAY continues…
Styx – The Grand Illusion — 9/10
💿 Original Black Vinyl
Now THIS is Styx.
The Grand Illusion is where everything really came together for them. Big hooks, big vocals, prog-rock weirdness, arena-rock muscle, and just enough Dennis DeYoung drama to make it all work.
“Come Sail Away” is obviously the monster. One of those songs that starts small and ends up sounding like the whole planet joined the band.
“Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” is fantastic.
The title track “The Grand Illusion” is pure Styx.
And then you get “Miss America” and “Castle Walls,” which keep the album from feeling like it is just built around the singles.
This is probably the album where Styx really found that balance between rock band and theatrical band before things got a little more… ambitious later. 😂
Great record.
Easy 9/10 for me.
