🎶 ALBUM VAULT #250 🎶
Wow. 250 albums.
And lately I’m finding it harder and harder to find time to actually SPIN them.
But here we are.
The Concert Journey continues…
Daryl Hall & John Oates – Our Kind of Soul — 8/10
💿 Black Vinyl
The main attraction of that Tears for Fears show at the Allstate Arena was, of course…
HALL & OATES.
My wife took me, Tears for Fears absolutely crushed their opening set, and then Daryl and John came out.
Sadly, I didn’t know at the time that this would be the last time I would ever see Hall & Oates together. 🙁
Now Our Kind of Soul.
Yes, it’s basically another album of Motown, Philly soul and old-school R&B covers.
But this is Hall & Oates.
Soul music wasn’t some costume they decided to put on for an album. It was baked into their sound from the very beginning.
And they absolutely KNOCKED THIS ONE OUT OF THE PARK.
“Standing in the Shadows of Love”
“I’ll Be Around”
“Used to Be My Girl”
“I Can Dream About You”
“Neither One of Us”
“After the Dance”
“Rock Steady”
“Love TKO”
“Can’t Get Enough of Your Love”
“You Are Everything”
“I’m Still in Love with You”
“O-O-H Child”
That is a hell of a songbook.
And they don’t just copy the originals. They make them sound like Hall & Oates songs.
There are also a few originals mixed in, including “Let Love Take Control” and “Soul Violins,” and they fit right in with everything else.
Released in 2004, Our Kind of Soul reached #69 on the Billboard 200.
Not one of their giant commercial albums.
But for a Hall & Oates fan?
This is just two guys going back to the music that helped make them who they were.
And for Album Vault #250, I can’t think of many artists I’d rather have sitting on the turntable.
