🎶 ALBUM VAULT #233 🎶
Back to the big bad concert list…
Genesis – We Can’t Dance — 9/10
What an album.
What a tour.
And who knew at the time that this would be the last Genesis studio album with Phil Collins?
Released in 1991, We Can’t Dance was another monster for Genesis. It hit #4 in the U.S., #1 in the UK, and went 4x Platinum in America.
And the hits were everywhere:
“No Son of Mine” — #12
“I Can’t Dance” — #7
“Hold on My Heart” — #12
“Jesus He Knows Me” — #23
“Never a Time” — #21
And those VIDEOS.
“I Can’t Dance” with that ridiculous walk became part of the song. Phil, Tony and Mike looked like they were having a blast making fun of the whole MTV image thing.
Then “Jesus He Knows Me” had Phil playing the completely crooked TV preacher. Still funny. Still sharp.
But the thing I love about this album is Genesis still gave us the LONG stuff too.
“Driving the Last Spike” is over ten minutes and is classic storytelling Genesis.
“Dreaming While You Sleep” is dark and beautiful.
And then there’s “Fading Lights.”
Another ten-minute-plus track, and listening now, knowing what happened later, that song hits completely differently.
Phil officially left Genesis in 1996 to concentrate on his solo career. Genesis continued with Ray Wilson, but We Can’t Dance ended up being the final studio album from the Phil Collins/Tony Banks/Mike Rutherford version of the band.
At the time, none of us knew that.
We were just watching Genesis put on one hell of a show.
Great release.
And a great memory.
