🎶 ALBUM VAULT #229 🎶
Staying with Duncan today.
Duncan Sheik – Covers 80s — 10/10
💿 Plex Server FLAC
What an amazing collection.
This could have been a simple “here are some ’80s songs I like” covers album.
It is NOT that.
Duncan takes these songs and completely makes them his own. Slower, moodier, more atmospheric, and somehow they still keep the heart of the originals.
The track list is ridiculous:
“Stripped” – Depeche Mode
“Hold Me Now” – Thompson Twins
“Love Vigilantes” – New Order
“Kyoto Song” – The Cure
“What Is Love?” – Howard Jones
“So Alive” – Love and Rockets
“Shout” – Tears for Fears
“Gentlemen Take Polaroids” – Japan
“Life’s What You Make It” – Talk Talk
“William, It Was Really Nothing” – The Smiths
“Stay” – The Blue Nile
“The Ghost in You” – The Psychedelic Furs.
And the best part is he doesn’t try to out-’80s the ’80s.
He strips these songs down and finds something different inside them.
His version of “Shout” barely sounds like Tears for Fears anymore.
“Hold Me Now” becomes this beautiful, quiet thing.
“Stripped” gets completely rebuilt.
And “The Ghost in You” is just gorgeous.
That voice…
I could listen to Duncan sing this kind of material forever.
For me, this isn’t just a covers album.
It’s a masterpiece.
