Next up, Scritti Politti.
For me, this one is basically about one song…
“Perfect Way.”
That thing was HUGE in the U.S. for them, reaching #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it still has that slick, instantly recognizable mid-’80s sound.
The band was really centered around Green Gartside, and by this point Scritti Politti had moved a long way from their post-punk beginnings into super-polished synth-pop. David Gamson and Fred Maher were a big part of that sound too.
There are a few other decent tracks here, especially “Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin),” “Absolute,” “Hypnotize” and “The Word Girl.”
But honestly?
Nothing else really grabs me the way “Perfect Way” does.
Cool production. Very ’85. Very polished.
Just not an album I’m going back to a lot.
