🎶 ALBUM VAULT #254 🎶
GREATEST HITS HUMPER keeps rolling…
Cheap Trick – Authorized Greatest Hits — 8/10
💿 Plex Server
Cheap Trick has HITS.
A LOT of them.
And being an Illinois band from Rockford makes them even more fun for me.
The classic lineup of Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos built this weird perfect mix of hard rock, power pop and just enough oddball Cheap Trick personality to make them instantly recognizable.
And the songs…
“I Want You to Want Me” — #7
“Dream Police” — #26
“Can’t Stop Fallin’ Into Love” — #12
“The Flame” — #1
Then you’ve got “Surrender,” “If You Want My Love,” “Tonight It’s You,” “She’s Tight,” “Ain’t That a Shame” and more.
And honestly, some Cheap Trick songs are WAY bigger than their chart numbers ever suggested.
“Surrender” only got to #62.
COME ON.
Authorized Greatest Hits came out in 2000, and what makes this one cooler than the standard cash-grab greatest-hits record is that Cheap Trick actually picked the songs themselves.
So you get the hits, but also live versions, alternate takes and songs the band clearly wanted represented.
That includes the killer Budokan version of “I Want You to Want Me” and a live version of “The Flame.”
Is every Cheap Trick hit here?
Nope.
Somehow “Don’t Be Cruel”, which went all the way to #4, isn’t on the original collection.
BLAH. 😂
But overall?
This is a damn good Cheap Trick sampler.
And Cheap Trick is just one of those bands where once you start going through the catalog, you realize…
Holy crap, they had a LOT of great songs.
