The Concert Journey continues…
Goo Goo Dolls – Goo Goo Dolls — 7/10
💿 Plex Media Server
This is NOT your “Iris” Goo Goo Dolls.
It’s not your “Slide” Goo Goo Dolls.
Hell, it’s not even your “Name” or “We Are the Normal” Goo Goo Dolls.
This is the Goo Goo Dolls before almost anybody knew who they were.
I got to see them years later in Tinley Park while I was working at WTMX, and WHAT A SHOW.
They were opening for the artist coming up in my next review, and John Rzeznik was hilarious that night. He had been at the WTMX Golf Outing earlier in the day and, well… there MAY have been a few adult beverages involved. 😂
Let’s just say John seemed to be enjoying himself.
Back in 1987 though, the Goo Goo Dolls were still basically a scrappy Buffalo punk band: Robby Takac on bass and handling most of the vocals, John Rzeznik on guitar and vocals, and George Tutuska on drums.
And this album is ROUGH.
Fast. Loud. Messy. Punky.
Basically a GREAT jam album.
“Torn Apart,” “Messed Up,” “Livin’ in a Hut,” “I’m Addicted,” “Hardsores” and “Different Light” sound almost nothing like the band that would eventually own radio in the late 90s.
Then you get covers of “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”
Just plug in, crank it up and GO.
You can hear little pieces of the Goo Goo Dolls they would eventually become, but this band was still a LONG way from “Iris.”
And that’s exactly why this one is fun.
