🎶 ALBUM VAULT #228 🎶
Cloudy Chicago Friday… and honestly, this one hits a little differently today.
Duncan Sheik – Daylight — 8/10

I love Duncan Sheik.
I could listen to this guy sing forever. There is just something about that voice. Calm, warm, a little melancholy… it gets me every time.
And today I’m sad.
Duncan died yesterday at just 56, after being hospitalized suddenly. Way, way too soon.
Daylight came out in 2002 and is one of those albums that never needed to beat you over the head. It just settles in.
“Genius” is a great opener.
“Half-Life” is probably one of the best-known songs here and has that classic Duncan sound.
“Start Again” is beautiful.
“On Her Mind” and “Such Reveries” keep that dreamy, thoughtful mood going.
Then there’s “On a High,” which actually became a #1 dance hit. Kind of crazy for an artist most people think of as quiet singer-songwriter music.
“Magazines,” “For You,” “Good Morning!,” “Memento” and the long closer “Shine Inside” round out a really solid record. The official track list still looks exactly like the kind of album I want to put on and just let play.
Duncan was so much more than “Barely Breathing.”
Great songwriter. Great voice. Great musician.
And knowing he’s gone now makes this listen feel a little heavier.
