🎶 ALBUM VAULT #224 🎶
Oh, you think you can act AND sing?
Next up, ol’ Buster himself. 😂
Phil Collins – No Jacket Required — 10/10
💿 Original Black Vinyl
This was really the beginning of the decade of Phil.
Phil was already huge with Genesis and had two successful solo albums, but No Jacket Required took him into another universe. In 1985 you could barely turn on MTV or the radio without finding Phil Collins somewhere.
And before all of that, the guy was actually an actor. He was the Artful Dodger in Oliver! as a kid, later popped up on Miami Vice, and eventually starred as Buster Edwards in Buster. So yes, today’s theme definitely counts. 😂
Then look at these hits:
“Sussudio” — #1
Pure ’80s Phil. Horns, synths and a chorus that will live in your head for the rest of the day.
“One More Night” — #1
One of his great ballads. Simple and beautiful.
“Don’t Lose My Number” — #4
Great song, and that wonderfully ridiculous video still makes me laugh.
“Take Me Home” — #7
One of my favorite Phil songs. Big drums, huge ending, and Peter Gabriel and Sting even show up on backing vocals.
And those are just the singles. “Only You Know and I Know,” “Long Long Way to Go,” “Who Said I Would,” “Inside Out” and “Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore” make this a GREAT album front to back.
The album spent seven weeks at #1 in the U.S. and won Phil the Grammy for Album of the Year. Meanwhile he was still fronting Genesis, who were about to have their own monster run with Invisible Touch.
Seriously…
Solo Phil. Genesis Phil. Acting Phil. Live Aid Phil.
The man was EVERYWHERE.
And you already know where I stand…
I LOVE PHIL COLLINS MUSIC. ALL DAY. EVERY DAY.
