Rick Springfield – Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet — 10/10
💿 Original Black Vinyl
Next up, Rick Springfield.
Actor. Rock star. Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital. And at this point in 1982, the guy was absolutely on fire.
Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet followed Working Class Dog and went all the way to #2 on the Billboard 200.
This album is loaded.
“I Get Excited” is one of my favorites. Pure Rick Springfield power pop.
“What Kind of Fool Am I” is another great one and reached #21.
“Kristina” is fantastic.
Then there’s “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” Huge song. It spent four weeks at #2 on the Hot 100, blocked from #1 by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s “Ebony and Ivory.”
And then you get “April 24, 1981.”
Only about a minute and a half long, but man, it hits hard. Rick wrote it after the death of his father, and you can feel how personal it is.
There’s plenty more here too: “Calling All Girls,” “Tonight,” “Black Is Black,” “How Do You Talk to Girls,” “Still Crazy for You,” “The American Girl” and “Just One Kiss.”
This is one of those albums where Rick Springfield the actor almost disappears and Rick Springfield the musician completely takes over.
Great record.
