🎶 ALBUM VAULT #238 🎶
Back to that all-star night at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago…
Michael McDonald – Greatest Hits — 9/10
💿 Plex Server
And yes, somehow I own ZERO Michael McDonald vinyl.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??
After AWB opened, out came the golden voice himself.
Michael McDonald absolutely CRUSHED it.
Solo hits. Doobie Brothers. Motown. Duets. And even a really fitting tribute to the late Gregory Hines.
The catalog is just ridiculous:
“What a Fool Believes” — #1
“Takin’ It to the Streets” — #13
“Minute by Minute” — #14
“Real Love” — #5
Then solo:
“I Keep Forgettin’” — #4
“Sweet Freedom” — #7
“No Lookin’ Back” — #34
And the duets:
“On My Own” with Patti LaBelle — #1
“Yah Mo B There” with James Ingram — #19
And now for the best moment of the night…
During “What a Fool Believes,” my wife leans over and says:
“He really loves the Doobie Brothers.”
I said…
“Because he WAS ONE.”
She looked completely embarrassed.
Then about ten seconds later she leans back over and says…
“Do you think they meant DOOBIE… like doobie?”
While making the pot-smoking gesture. 😂😂😂
I lost it.
By the way, “Sweet Freedom” came from Running Scared, starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, which made that tribute hit even harder.
Michael McDonald has one of those voices where the second he opens his mouth, you know exactly who it is.
Golden voice is right.
