SOUNDTRACK MONDAY
Prince – Batman — 8/10
💿 Plex Server
Next up, Prince meets Batman.
Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman was HUGE. Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson having way too much fun as the Joker, and this dark, weird Gotham that felt totally different from the old TV version.
Then somebody decided Prince should make music for it.
Of course they did. 😂
Danny Elfman handled the actual movie score, but Prince created this whole nine-song companion album, and it became a monster on its own, spending six weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200.
The big one is obviously “Batdance.”
Completely bonkers song. Movie dialogue, funk, guitar, samples, Prince being Prince.
And somehow it went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Then there’s “Partyman.”
Another perfect Joker-era Prince track. Funky, strange and fun, and it reached #18 in the U.S.
The rest of the album is a little all over the place, which is why I’m at an 8 instead of a 10.
But when it works?
It REALLY works.
Prince and Batman in 1989 was such a weird combination…
And somehow it made perfect sense.
